I have just been sent this very interesting article written by Bank Sarasin on the “worst case scenario” for the current crisis in Japan.
“On Monday 14th March, we have published the quick response on our assessment of the impact of the catastrophe in Japan on the Japanese and the world economy, on currencies, rates, stock markets and sectors. This analysis was based on the assumption that all damages were known already. But the problems at Japan’s nuclear power plants linger on and a major contamination event cannot be excluded. Clients have been asking us for our thoughts about a tail risk scenario. We are happy to provide you with our analysis, but please note that this scenario represents a worst-case scenario and not the most likely base-case scenario. Nevertheless, scenario-building is helpful for showing that even in the most adverse event; there are good reasons for investors not to panic.
What could possibly happen under the assumption that the nuclear accident spirals out of control? In the worst case, we would have to assume a Chernobyl-type scenario.”
